Better context.
A better starting point.

A practical exercise in turning a vague request into something you can review. No account or AI subscription needed.

The task

Imagine you run a small design studio. You want an AI tool to draft a welcome email for new clients. Your first request is: “Write a friendly welcome email.”

The tool can produce an email, but it has no reliable way to know your process, what you promised, or what the client should do next.

Give it something to work with

Draft a welcome email for a new brand-design client. Use the approved project brief and onboarding checklist below. Ask them to send their existing brand files and choose a kickoff time. Keep it under 180 words. Don’t invent dates, deliverables or links. Flag anything missing.

Now you have a task, source material, boundaries and a definition of a useful result. You can inspect the answer against the brief.

What would improve the original request most?

Choose an answer to see the reasoning.

Try it on your work

  1. Pick a small task you already understand.
  2. List the approved information the tool needs.
  3. Write down what a useful answer must include.
  4. Ask for a draft, then check it against that list.
  5. Keep a note of what you had to correct.

The exercise is about making your judgement easier to apply. More detail is useful when it changes the task or gives you evidence to check.
