A useful directory
starts with the information.

By Rob Thompson / Digital Content Labs · Lessons from the Health Village implementation.

When someone arrives at a healthcare directory, they may know a practitioner’s name. They may also arrive with a condition, a type of service or a question they cannot yet phrase precisely. A useful directory gives them several clear ways to navigate.

Start with the relationships

The important work is deciding how the information fits together: practitioner, service, condition, location and contact route. A biography alone cannot carry all of those relationships consistently.

In DCL’s Health Village Esher implementation, practitioner profiles connect with condition information and patient guides. Visitors can browse practitioners, filter by specialism and explore conditions. The live pages make those routes inspectable.

Separate source material from published copy

A practitioner’s website, qualifications and service information provide source material. A patient-facing profile has a different job: explain the relevant information clearly and make the next step understandable.

AI can assist research and preparation. It is still necessary to identify the source of a claim, flag missing information and decide who needs to approve it. Clinical statements need appropriate review rather than an assumption that a fluent draft is correct.

Make updates part of the design

A directory is a continuing information service. Services, people and contact routes change. A useful implementation needs clear ownership of the source information and a way to review changes before publishing them.

  • Which fields must be present?
  • Who confirms credentials and service descriptions?
  • Which statements need clinical review?
  • What happens when information becomes outdated?
  • Can a visitor find the relevant next step?

Inspect the journey itself

Open the directory as a visitor. Try a specialism route, then a condition route. Check whether the information stays consistent and whether the contact destination makes sense.

The existence of those routes is observable. Any claim about increased bookings or patient outcomes needs its own measurement. For the current DCL case study, we show the implementation and keep those claims separate.
